Finding Your Centre (#156)



“We have an anchor that keeps the soul
…Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”

What is your centre?  What holds you together when events in your life fall apart?

These days we really need a centre that will hold - too many things threaten our security.  Things like life-threatening illnesses such as the host of non-communicable diseases so prevalent today.

Also, there is the very real danger of being engulfed by financial difficulties – especially precipitated by chronic job layoffs.  In these days of global recession, job security here in Barbados is a real worry for many.

If these are not enough there is also the ever possibility of hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.

Now my purpose here is not to present a menu of horrific possibilities to scare you.  But really, we all need to be prepared for life’s disasters.

This is the reason many people invest in insurance policies – to sort of cushion the effects of the “what ifs” of life.

May I gently (yet, somewhat strongly) suggest that you place your hope and confidence in the One who is the centre of all life – the Lord Jesus Christ?

I have placed my confidence in Him and am sure that He will provide and make a way for me regardless of what should come my way.

You should, too.  For if your centre should move or fall apart, He remains the solid Rock – the Anchor of your soul, your true centre!

Of Panic, Prayer, Prophecy, and Promptings

What do you do when you are faced with an unexpected situation? If you are like me you press the panic button! Thankfully, my faith 'kicked' in and I prayed fervently for a miracle. Yes, it would take nothing less than a miracle for this girl waiting at the bus stop with no money to get home! How did that happen? Well, she left home with just bus fare for one trip; confident she had her purse in her bag. But She forgot that it was still in her 'church bag' from the day before. She had forgotten remove it! So there she was - waiting for a miracle and humming "Still I Rise" to counter the panic which would rise now and then. Suddenly, she found herself saying these prophetic words: "Whoever you are, stop and give me a ride home!" Sometime later, the miracle occurred! A minister-friend pulled up at the bus stop and offered her a lift.   Apparently he was on his way home and was debating which road he should take.   He was impressed ...

Hymns of Nostalgia (#66)

Recently, while thumbing through an old hymn book, I was swept away by a wave of nostalgia.   I was transported back in time to childhood as I encountered the hymns of yesteryear. I became reacquainted with names like D Otis Teasley, Daniel S. Warner, Barney E. Warren, Charles W. Naylor and Andrew L. Byer – all hymn writers whose songs have really blessed me. Songs, like photos, surely evoke memories.   These songs reminded me of my early days in the Church of God Reformation movement. (Back then to us it was simply referred to as “The Church of God.”) What beautiful lyrics comprise these hymns of yesteryear.   Take for example, “I Know In My Heart What It Means” by D.
