Let Your Flamboyance Shine (# 82)

Image
Each year it happens without fail.  In mid-year the sky is on fire with the brilliant scarlet blossoms of the flamboyant trees. These trees are really flamboyant indeed – their branches stretch out into a beautiful display of vibrant colour.  Really lovely! Alas, during the season I discovered one almost overrun by a troublesome, meandering vine. How did this happen?  Well it did not happen overnight.  The vine grew and grew – unhindered. You know, bad habits, vices if left unchecked will destroy our beauty – physically or spiritually.  The thing is to get rid of them early, before they have a chance to take root and grow. Let’s do an internal audit today and ask God to help us to get rid of any ‘vines’ which may pose a potential danger to our character. Let’s make our flamboyance shine through! ©Kerina Hall

Blind-sided (# 81)

It happened.  Despite my best efforts to avoid it.  What am I talking about? Remember my last post about the sugar apples?  Well, I have been picking quite a few these days – determined to beat the birds at their game. So, just yesterday I went outside to check on some more.  (You know sugar apples are ready to be picked when rind segments begin to separate) “Nope,” I said to myself.  “These are not ready yet.” Then I saw it – an empty shell of an apple hanging on the tree.  The birds had beaten me again! This happened last year and I had vowed it wouldn’t this year. But how did this happen, anyway?  Each day I was looking and picking the apples that were ready, never missing any.  How did I miss this one? A silly question, really, when you think about it.  Who has a better vantage point – a bird in a tree, or a human being on the ground? You know the answer.  Yes, exactly! So…score one for the birds!  They beat me on my blind side.  They saw wh

Nature’s Sweet Treats (# 80)

Sugar apples – one of nature’s sweet treats – are another fruit in season here in Barbados. How we love them.  “We” of course also includes birds and ants! Hmm… Last year when my tree bore would you believe the birds got there before I did?  I discovered the “shell” of an apple hanging from the tree. In my opinion, that was one apple too many for the birds and ants! So this year vigilance is the word!  Round the clock surveillance will be employed! But I don’t know how feasible this plan is since these creatures awaken before I do! Hmm… You know, it’s amazing how God has provided for all of His creation.  Birds, especially, have it made.  Theirs is a varied diet.  They fly from tree to tree eating a variety of fruits without having to work.  They also eat scraps we discard. I thought of this recently as I watched a humming bird fly from flower to flower, getting its fill of nectar. God has also provided for us as well.  In spite of the v
