In Times Like These (#56)

“These are the times that try men’s souls.” (Thomas Paine, 'The American Crisis').
We in the 21st century would certainly agree with this statement.
Daily, it seems we are faced with news of some disaster: Meteorites falling from the sky, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, political unrest, economic instability, shootings, etc.
The world is in a state of turmoil – physically, socially, economically, and morally.  And it continues…
This, of course produces stress; many are uncertain about what the future holds.
I have found that the Bible is a great source of help in times like these.  It is realistic. It acknowledges that there will be difficult times and depressing situations, but it offers hope as well.
Consider the words of Jesus:  In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
It is possible to be buffeted by external forces and yet be peaceful internally.  The world represents any and everything which threatens our security and peace of mind, and even our very existence.
In these times it is vital to have something or Someone to rely on.  Let’s face it, with all our gifts, abilities, even financial well-being, we are still vulnerable in some way.  Even the richest and most comfortable person in the world is anxious about something.
Again, I present the Bible as a source of comfort:
“Casting all your care upon him [Jesus]; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7)
“Be careful [anxious] for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.   And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).

We must come to the realization that in ourselves we are weak and need help.  Jesus Christ is the One who can help us.

A relationship with Him is therefore vital to coping with the stress in today’s world.
